Devon Birding (6 Viewers)

Hi Jon

I had 12 Fulmar over at Haggington point on Wednesday. And I've heard reports of over 200 birds at Woody Bay in the last week.

Stu

Thanks Stu, that's impressive numbers up on the north coast there! Listening to the wind now, I'm glad we got out this morning!

Jon

A look at Beesands Ley this morning showed the 3 Scaup still there with the Red-crested X Tufted Duck hybrid. High counts of 103 Gadwall and 23 Mute Swan. Also 6 Shoveler, 19 Tufted Duck and 25 Pochard. Nearby a nice flock of 100 Lapwings at Beeson Pool ( turn off for Beesands on the Stokenham - Start Point road ).
Afterwards had a look around for Cattle Egret. The two still present in the cattle field east of Palegate Cross near Churchstowe and 2 in the original kale field which again has cattle in it by the Easton turn off on the old Kingsbridge - Salcombe road.

The female Scaup was still on the Exeter Canal at Double Locks and a lot more confiding than Malcolm the Mandarin!

The Scaup did fly off to the pool at Riverside Valley Park after being flushed by the damned canoeists but soon returned.

Perry, as soon as I can, I must have a day down your way. Been a while since I had a look at the lovely South Hams.

At least a hundred and thirty seven Lapwings and nineteen Snipe in a ploughed field by the canal west of Sampford Peverell.

The use of a scope may have pulled a Jack Snipe or a Common Sandpiper out of the flock which was annoying.

Approx 100 lapwings in a field adjacent to the cycle path at Yelland heading towards Instow.

No Grey Phalarope though!

It may be worthwhile looking over at Appledore (Lifeboat slip a good bet) it was seen flying in that direction yesterday by Greysands Boy. I didnt get there today but I'm in the area tomorow.

Saw a Peregrine under the Torridge Bridge this afternoon. The first of the year for me.

Snipe

Snipe are a nice find for Fremington Pill Stu.

Since that cold snap at christmas the Snipe seem to have taken up residence in the cover on the far bank but not that many, normaly just one's and two's. Seem to be a good number of Snipe around this year in general.

Nice to meet you on sunday Roy cracking picture's of the Grey Phalarope.

Must try to get down Stu, never managed a decent shot of a Snipe. Thanks for the comment on the Phalarope - what cracking views we had.

3 cattle egret in the field next to the chruch in powderham.

i also had a look for partridge. anyone have any ideas?

Someone was good enough to put the Phalarope on Birdguides with enough time for me to scoot round there... and nearly miss it as I walked all around Sandymere (right next to the visitor centre at Northam Burrows Country Park), before almost falling over it!! Did I take the camera?
Missed it at Instow earlier in the week, so glad to catch up today.

If you want Red-legged Partridge, then go to Chiverstone Farm near Kenton. There seem to be plenty in fields around the farm (plus a healthy number of Brambling in the finch flock there!). :t: Grey Partridge are now very scarce in Devon - I haven't got any regular sites for them - if you get to know one in East Devon, please let me know!

Cheers

Terry

I was driving home on the old Barnstaple to Exeter road and got to New Bridge (just the other side of Bishops Tawton) and I thought I saw a Black Swan in amongst a group of 4 Mute Swans.

I could be wrong but I was driving.

Not a great find I know but I has anyone else seen one in the area?
