Very busy at the bird feeder today! (19 Viewers)

Hi, another Droll Yankees fan I see. I have the Finch Flocker and want the Onyx too, but need to save some pennys first. Never seen a Brambling either.

Yes the Droll Yankees are very attractive feeders. They are expensive but importantly extremely robust. The onyx 4-port feeder was to replace a DY Classic A6 feeder which is about 17 years old and still in excellent condition. The A6 is just a tad small and requires filling every half day during this Winter weather. Also the onyx feeder has the all-round perches which are preferable for the birds, plus the easy-clean facility. That said I won't be updating the more conventional yellow goldfinch flocker which has been hugely successful for the 5 years I've had it for goldfinch, siskin and redpoll, despite there being an onyx version of this too. The nyger seed lasts longer than the sunflower hearts as it is only used by the tiny finches.

JUst been catching up on the posts. Sounds like we have all had some interesting visitors.
Only seen a Yellowhammer at Old Moor reserve what a nice visitor to the garden.

I still have not had any Redpolls and we have always had them in the past. The Blackbirds are plentiful as are the Tits, had quite a few Goldfinches but only 3 or 4 Greenfinches. The GSW has been as has the Nuthatch and we had about 5 Robins all chasing round. Had Dunnocks but not seen any House Sparrows yet.

My little garden in Northwich Cheshire. Photo taken just after i arrived home at 6.30pm tonight after my commute home from Manchester on the M56 in the snow with frozen water in the washer bottle and loads of salt on the windscreen...........great.

My garden is the size of a postage stamp but my feeders (probably too many for it's size lol) has had some lovely visitors. :t::t:

Well done mate, doesnt matter what size garden as long as the set up is right....
Some people miss the opportunity to liven their garden or yard up with wildlife, its really easy

build it and they will come!

A welcome back to 2 parakeets this morning, along with, this afternoon, 4 bramblings (3 male, 1 female).

Despite all the wonderful characters and colourings of finches, parakeets, doves, pigeons, magpies, blackbirds, starlings, wagtail and tits, one bird still stands out whenever it shows up amongst all the exotica - the lone robin whose unique jizz somehow make it seem like it comes from a different planet to all the others.

Dave (BFB) I'll happily swap 2 bramblings for 2 of your redpolls :t:

I have joined Richat, Bird Spotter & Squidge with a Pied Wagtail this morning... first since January 4th

Won't get any wagtails here of any description till spring, way south by now.

Had a very nice Fox wandering round under my feeders today, Great Tits starting to mob it. Also two Roe Deer prancing across the ice beyond.

With heavy snow overnight, many birds as expected - two White-backed Woodpeckers the best of the visiting bunch, but the sheer volume of Great Tits makes for great viewing - probably close to average winter totals, c400 daily at both sites.

Today started off with strong south westerly winds, rain and a temperature rising to + 6 degrees as compared with last nights temperature of - 12 degrees.Big thaw in progress and plenty of birds visiting the garden throughout the day.
Goldfinch, Greanfinch,Sparrows,Blue and Great Tits, Wood Pigeons, Collard Doves.

BS Looks like you've also got goldfinch city there. It never ceases to amaze me how many there are around these days. They are the most abundant bird in my garden in the Winter, by some distance. Second place chaffinch, third place collared dove.

... as I turned round about 8 LTT's landed 4 ft away on the suet pellets, I looked up at the house an about another 8 were on the other feeder. Then 2 or 3 came on the nuts I had just put out only 2 feet or so from where I was stood and they stayed for a minute or two it was so exciting.

Slightly different version, a flock round my feeders today. Not an amazing shot, was just about to start snowing again.

I have been stuck at home for 2 days but what a 2 days. Thursday had a huge flock of Fieldfare land in the Hawthorn trees further down the garden and my Long Tailed Tits came back. Friday I topped up the peanut feeder the Jay has been going on and as I turned round about 8 LTT's landed 4 ft away on the suet pellets, looked up at the house an about another 8 were on the other feeder. Then 2 or 3 came on the nuts I had just put out only 2 feet or so from where I was stood and they stayed for a minute or two it was so exciting.

A lovely encounter. I posted a photo of a LTT a year ago with ice on it's tail someone said it looked like a ice lolly.:t: Lovely birds.
