Leica Noctivid 10x42, Swaro NL Pure 12x42, or Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 (1 Viewer)

I am in the hunt for the best. Buy once, cry once bino purchase. I have narrowed the search field down to Leica Noctivid 10x42, Swarovski NL Pure 10x42 or 12x42, or the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42.

I went to Sportsman's Warehouse and found the Leica Noctivid 10x42 and the NL Pure 10x42. The staff member was helpful and we went outside the store with both pairs to do some comparison.

The Leica blew my mind. Initial impression was out of this world. The details, the colors.. It was great. The NL Pure 10x42, was not impressive initially. I needed to do some adjustments, but once I did those, the view was incredible. I knew the field of view was significantly bigger and looked for it. Once I compared the two, I had a harder time enjoying the view of far off mountains in the Leica when the field of view was so much more in the NL Pure. I compared the details and colors. I thought the colors were a bit better in the Leica, but honestly no significant difference. Both binos provided an unbelievable view, just the Leica was a far narrower view. The NL is hundreds more... Is the wider fov really worth an extra hundreds?

But Swarovski has a NL Pure 12x42... that has the same fov as the Noctivid 10x42.... I haven't seen one yet, but that difference could make the extra little more palatable..

I haven't seen the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 yet. The fov is not as big as the NL, but is wider than the Noctivid.. It seems to go for a few hundred cheaper than the NL.

I am a hunter more than a birder, looking for moose blending into a forest on a far off ridge, details on Dall sheep horns, antler points through the forest... You birders know your binos better than anyone though, so I look here.

Anyone else been down this path? Surely I'm not the only one. Thoughts?

Welcome to BF. Hunting is not something that goes down well here. But I’d probadly go with the NL or SF in 10x42 for your purposes. Both of which are more geared to both hunting and birding. The Leica’s of course are gorgeous, but for your purpose stick with Zeiss or Swarovski.

Thank you Paul. I appreciate the welcome and information. Not trying to ruffle any feathers here, I hope I do not. I am a conservationist and believe proper management keeps wildlife levels high for everyone to enjoy.

Any experience with the NL 12x42? I normally would not go into the field with a 12x as a 'glassing' bino, but I am amazed they have as wide of a FOV as most 10x42s...

It seems you really liked the Noctivid view. Leica has a distinct view which sets them apart from the others. Also, the design and build quality of Leicas are wonderful. ... zeee best IMO. This makes Leicas very enjoyable to use. You'll have to decide whether you truly need or desire the extra FOV. If it's not crucial then go with Leica.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm just going to jump in here and wish you a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum

You will regret 12x42.

Edit: just noticed you prefer hunting. I don't know much in that field, was thinking birding.

To enjoy wide afov (the headlining feature of NL), you need big exit pupil. Especially during daytime.

12x42 is opposite of big exit pupil.

Astronomers like the 12x42 though, night time eye pupil makes eye position less critical and they can enjoy the huge AFOV.

Binoculars do not care who is looking through them, what they are looking at, or why they are looking at it, a bit like telephones don’t care what language you are speaking.

Sometimes I do wish we would lay this hunting vs birding “stuff” aside, and just concentrate on being binocular users.
So astronomers are same as birder same as night hunter?

I appreciate this birdforum site because of all the knowledge and experience here. We are all just looking for great binoculars.

Your going to get so many different opinions from so many different people here , from brand fanboys to magnification fanboys. But I think most here will agree that anyone of the three binoculars you have in mind, in 10x42 would be a phenomenal choice for your purposes. Don’t get hung up on magnification and FOV.

All the different opinions and experiences, even the biased ones, make this forum great. Ultimately I need to spend more time behind each of those pairs and let my eyes decide. The level of importance I put on that FOV is really what I have been struggling with. That initial impression I got through the Noctovids was something I will not forget for a while.

And you never will, even after you get the SF or NL🤪.

"buy all of them...you need them...they'll make you feel so happy ..."
