Cornwall Birding (8 Viewers)

Re Premission to use photographs. I noticed on the Cornwall Birding site a picture of the Yellow-throated Vireo at Kenidjack captioned 'photographer unknown'. I'm sure most birders in Cornwall will know its by Ren Hathway. It was in the Bird Report for that year!! Then there are a lot of hypocrites down here. A previous County Recorder is always travelling here from the other end of the county though he is anti-twitchers! Then I think he is also anti-conservation having suppressed many birds, particulary an American Bittern on a reserve that would have raised thousands for conservation. At least Cornwall birding is better than it has been since the lows of the 80's but there are still a few c***s about!
Paul

Hi Paul I think the example of the American Bittern is perhaps the wrong one to quote. I remember a conversation I had at the time with the then Chairman of the CBW&PS. He told me that the Warden decided not to release the news of this mega due to the lack of suitable parking and the fact that perhaps thousands of Birders would have to walk across two fields owned by a local farmer. He did not see the bird either. I presume that when the Wilson's Phalarope was on the same reserve a couple of years ago this was a much lesser rarity and suitable parking was available.
Apart from that I agree with the rest of your post. Roger

Hi Paul, I do know it is by Ren, just havent got round to changing it........................done it now. Welcome to BF, by the way. ;-
)

OK Paul as you know the photograph is by Ren how come you never asked his premission to use it. You can't just take a picture off another website or wherever you got it from. I would assume that is theft.
Also with regards to Walmsley, a field was opened for the 2006 Wilson's phalarope with no problem at all. These days with a little effort, difficulties like parking can easily be resolved. The Bittern observer isn't well known for letting news out.

I donated money towards the erection of the hide at Walmsley and recall being agrieved at the time the news was not put out but was satisfied with the explanation given to me.
You can't really compare American Bittern with Wilson's Phalarope. For a start the Wilson's was presumably on view most of the time and can hardly be classed as a mega rarity these days. American Bittern is skulking and probably only on view infrequently. Only so many Birders could get in to the hide at any one time so imagine the queue of Birders stretching across the farmer's fields which normally have sheep and horses grazing.
If you think parking "can easily be resolved" perhaps you would let us know your personal experiences arranging parking where the landowners are not sympathetic.
I also recall that there is a notice in the hide asking Birders to avoid the temptation of taking shortcuts over the fields back to their cars so I imagine this was put up for a reason. As a user of this hide I would prefer to keep the farmer happy rather than make him anti Birder. Roger

Hi Paul,

Have you heard of more than one sighting of the snowy at Men-an-Tol? If so can you please give the details and can you also please give us the details of the sighting near Geevor.

Cheers

Hi Roger,

Just to correct a few points;
The warden was told about this bird and was forced to keep it quite. He must of seen the bird as that his photo was sent to BBRC to help get it accepted. There is amble parking available near the bridge if the need arises, (but at a small charge).
I agree that wardening would have been difficult at the site during the American Bitterns visit but would have been workable, access to the hides is via public footpaths and a legally agreed access path along the hedge, (ref: do not cross the field).

Also after the Bitterns visit a Black-headed Wagtail was noted from the same hide, this was also suppressed, (by the same observer). Both these birds would have brought in much needed funds for the reserve.

This sort of thing will not happen again here, with the reserve being well watched and well wardened with plans in place for the next mega. We are just waiting.

I think you'll find there was no drop in membership Big Man! My last word too (sorry Yorks entertainment-lovers!).

Yes I know I said that was my last word, but I just want to apologise for my part in the unsavoury slanging match. Conorbirder's response to my post simply drawing attention to the CBWPS forum just angered me and then I got drawn in. Sorry folks.

Photo of the Snowy Owl at Falmouth on Cornwall Birding now. Anyone think its a different bird?

Yes, (the other bird never left Zennor). After a good Lemming year the youngsters have had a good survival rate and some have wandered. The only real question is how many birds have visited Cornwall this autumn/ winter two or more?

Reports from Tregonetha this evening included 3 Hen Harriers, (male and 2 ringtails), 2 Merlin, 1 Sparrowhawk, 4 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, 3 Snipe and 150 Fieldfare.

Who saw it on the 7th Feb in the afternoon at Zennor though Camelbirder? That would be the only way to confirm the prescence of two birds as the plumage shown on pics is inseperable from my visual analysis.

Although Cornwall Birding and Birdguides have no records of the Zennor bird between 7th and 15th February, local birders have said that the bird was present but this infomation was not reported to stop photographs harrassing this magnificent bird.

It wasn't meant to anger you, it was simply a tongue in cheek comment that you took the wrong way and blew out of proportion. Don't feel you should apologise. You encouraged Henerz to let me and dave slug it out!

Definately my last word.

Derek, do you know who saw it at Zennor between the 7th and 11th? I have it on good authority that it was not there between those dates. Could do with a definate to rule out the two bird theory. (would be nice if there was two).

For theft you must have the intention to perminantly deprive the owner of it. For your info I have permission from Ren to use it, thanks. In fact i have just been speaking to him on the phone.

As for Wamlsley, i haven't mentioned Walmsley.

I apologise if I got things wrong. When I spoke to Ren last year and mentioned the picture, he didn't know it was on your site.
As regards Walmsley that was a reply to Roger.
