January 1st joint Birdforum list (2022 edition) (2 Viewers)

No worries. I'm getting tired so missed it. I'll call it a day with...

328) Bushtit.

Now, someone else can keep the score, if so inclined.
Thanks for doing the running totals. We've not tried it before, as I've always ducked the challenge of reconciling all the different naming conventions.

A nice easy update:
329) Black Francolin
330) Long-legged Buzzard

Reminder to anyone only looking at the thread now - you can still post additional species for several days after the big day, but you do need to have seen or heard the species on 1 Jan - no sneaking in an owl that you heard at dawn on the second!

Black Francolin, Sardinian Warbler and Long-legged Buzzard.

These three species are seen (or mainly heard in regard to the Francolin) almost daily from the garden here.
Assuming this was from Europe but not the UK, that takes Team Europe to 191 (UK 139, rest of Europe 143).

Meanwhile here's a first go at Team USA, 77 species with lots of people saying bad weather prevented them looking seriously:

A couple more yesterday afternoon - Cattle Tyrant and White-crested Tyrannulet. Again, wasn't birding, and not sure if Costanera Sur opened yesterday, perhaps (likely) not. If it were open, a 3-4 hr visit in summer usually nets 90+ species.

A couple more of the bird names in post 16 might cause confusion in a world context (depending on who else might post!): Pied Imperial Pigeon = Torresian Imperial Pigeon, and Mangrove Kingfisher = Torresian Kingfisher
TBH, I was working entirely from memory, so was often guessing the correct IOC name. I knew the name change for the Friarbird, mind, but old habits...

And at the end of the day, a number of UK posters don't even bother with the correct names and use 'wren' 'blackbird' etc. Usually this isn't an issue, but my currently Aus-based brain had to pause a couple of times...

Would that be Western or Eastern Cattle Egret...?

Western. It's been reported from the UK, Spain and Kenya so all places where people would get very excited about Eastern. I've fixed the name in my spreadsheet in case I re-post the Team Europe list at some point.

Not really a position to be jealous of considering that our lists are paid for by the fact that we do not currently have any clear way to get home. If this doesn't miraculously solve itself, those species may become mundane for us during our future life in Kenya :)

I'm pretty sure most birds I saw yesterday have already been added, but if a mammal list exists I saw Roe Deer, Fallow Deer and Pipistrelle Bat

Looks like I'll be able to help out the US list a lot. I did a CBC yesterday so I was somewhat restricted in where I could go, but I was still able to get a fair amount of species.
