June 2009 Moths (1 Viewer)

Some good day flying moths (and a few disturbed out of various undergrowth) today at Coombes valley RSPB,Tittesworth reservior and Carsington water....

Some nice moths there, Dave.

I had a bumper catch last night from my borrowed MV trap. I didn't know where to start and it took me over 4 hours to empty the trap; I began at 5am. I counted over 300 moths, about 70 species. Several I still have to identify. Many flew off when I opened the trap. I'm not used to this!

New for my garden were:
Bordered Beauty
Small Elephant Hawk-moth (2) |=)|
Green Silver-lines|=)|
Figure of Eighty

Several 'new for year' including:
Clouded Silver (2)
Barred Red (3) (one brown, one faded brown and one a washed out green!)
Small Angle Shades
Pine Beauty
Dark/Grey Dagger
Small Blood Vein
Green Pug (2)
Scalloped Oak
Short-cloaked Moth
Mottled Rustic

A few pix of the ones I had time to photo:

Nerine

Very good night last night - although midges were a problem exiting the trap this morning and biting me!
Highlights for me were:
Double Lines
Smokey Wave
Sharp Angled Peacock
Burnished Brass
Four Dotted Footman
Dark Fruit Tree Tortrix
Dark Arches
Green Arches
Knot Grass
True Lover's Knot
123 moths plus a few escapes of 42 species - enough for me to deal with

Some lovely photos and catches Nerine and Socksitis.

The unidentified micro from Coombes valley earlier was a male Nemophora degeerella with huge antennae.

Moster catch the night before last. Species count is going to come in at around the 70 mark. A few highlights but still working on the ID of a couple. Certainly my second ever Crambus pascuella and what looks very like Ethmia quadrillella, which would be a bit of a find if I'm right.

A good catch here last night as well with 54 species in 145 moths. No time to list them all as i'm going out to look for day flyers at a few local patches but these were some of the highlights including 6 hawkmoths within a few minutes of each other,5 Elelphant and 1 Lime!.

Peach Blossom NFY
Gothic NFY
Meal Moth NFY
Buff Arches NFY
Satin Wave NFY
Mottled Rustic NFY
Clepsis Consimilana NFY
Marbled Beauty NFY

I'll post some photos later.

Dave.

Hornet Moth

Found this beast this morning on my second day searching local poplars for the species. It was 8am and already this moth was warmed up and flew shortly after this photo. Might try a bit earlier in this warm weather.

I had a bumper catch on the 22nd. I had my first hawkmoth which was an Elephant Hawkmoth (2 of them), beautiful moths. I also had a Scarlet Tiger moth which was stunning. A few of the others were:
Lilac Beauty

Fan Foot
Scalloped Oak
Buff Ermine
Angle Shades
Peppered Moth
Figure of Eighty
Grey Dagger
Dark Arches
Poplar Grey
Barred Straw

quadrillella doesn't seem to be on the Surrey list so presumably it's a very local species - well done!
