Mallorca 2015 (2 Viewers)

It is very difficult reading about all the migration yet not being able to see any. Mostly Honey buzzard going through and a Sparrowhawk noted. Some Dotterel have just been seen on the central plain. I will have to put up a telescope at the bedroom window here, I am likely to be here for a while longer. Mike

Two Caspian terns from as Roca hide and some harrier movement, not sure if they were Hen or Montagu's. I have been moved to a room for a long convalescence but at least it has a window. If I set my scope up I reckon I will see some migration. Mike

You, sir, are a trooper! Get well soon.

Already seen some great birds from the window including a migrating harrier but too distant (my scope has been banned) a pair of Peregrine falcons, local Kestrel, real close up views of a Booted eagle and a group of 37 Cattle egrets going to roost just now.
Sadly the boat trip to Cabrera was postponed until tomorrow but I will report from there by the evening. What a time to be going there, I wish them luck. Mike

Hi Mike

Just returned to the island and hearing that you are being lazy

Get well we need you!

I was in Cuber this morning and have a brief look in the very windy condtions at a possible Spectacled warbler

Clear white eye. And i think it was not a common whitethroat but it was a rapid view.

On the right hand side of the path by the reservoir just before the Dam

I am just informing incase others manage to pick it up

Cheers for now and good birding to come

Mike

Hi mike
We (my husband & I) have booked flights for end April & beginning of May 2016, we shall be hiring a car and would like any suggestions you have as to where to base ourselves or particular places to visit during our stay.
Any help is greatly appreciated
Debbie & Chris

Hi Debbie and Chris, that's a good time of the year to be coming as migration will be well under way. There is no doubt that the north of the island is the best place to be in springtime. Pollenca and Alcudia would be best as there are so many great sites to visit from there, but it all depends on what kind of holiday you want, ie if you have other interests too. There are many great walks from those resorts and having a car will be a huge advantage for other places of interest on the island. Let me know what kind of things you want to focus on and I can hopefully help some more from there. Mike

Hi
As Mike says, it's a great time of year.
I'd certainly recommend getting a copy of A Birding Tourist's Guide to Majorca (2nd edition). Plenty of maps and itineraries and bang up to date, writtin by experienced locals. It's on sale in the UK.
Best wishes
Martin

Hi Mike sorry to hear you're not well, we're coming to Playa de Muro on Tuesday and planning on birding by bus and walking. We are planning to do Boquer and S'Albufeira Marshes. Have you got any other ideas by bus although I think the marshes will take up quite a bit of our time so may be enough for a week.
Hope you're better soon,
Kind Regards
Lyn and Mike

Hi Lyn and Mike, there is plenty to see near where you are staying but you could also include a trip to Son Real and maybe Albufereta too. I live in the south and always come by car so am the last person to help with public transport. I know many people have posted earlier on this thread about getting around by bus so maybe an amble back through these pages will help! I am home tomorrow but have a long recuperation ahead and can't drive. Have fun though, all the best, Mike

Hi Mike thanks for your helpful reply, I didn't notice until I posted my question, that you didn't have access to your computer, so really grateful you replied.
Get well soon, I'll report back after our holiday with any good birds we've seen, hopefully.
Kind regards
Lyn and Mike
