Mallorca 2018 (4 Viewers)

Hi Patrick,

I will be out from Monday next week, and dunnock is a glaring hole in my Mallorca list! Any tips on where you're seeing them?

Stew

Hello!!
Dunnocks are winterings and migrants in the Balearics. This year it seems that some migrants have been passing through later than they did last years (as some ornithologists have seen in the birdringing campaings like the one in Illa de l'Aire, Menorca). This could be the reason why we still find some of them here.
Regards,
Cristina.

Hi John, I was there 2 weeks ago and heard and saw Savi's warbler in the reeds to the left of the main entrance path. Could this be what you heard or can you seperate both calls ? I certainly can't.

Hi Kevin, I heard the bird on the left at the bottom of the main entrance path, as the path turns sharp left over a stone bridge, so roughly the same area as yours. Not confident of separating both songs, so was probably a Savi's. You don't get many Savi's in St. Helens.

Regards

John Taylor

Hi all, still no wryneck spotted but plenty heard, just been to Albufereta and spotted a spoonbill from the tower platform, this was today (30th) at about 13:00. Will send pic when back in the UK.

Great the Spoonbill!

For Wryneck try in the palm trees in the garden of Bóquer House. Some weeks ago I saw one looking for a hole, so quite sure there is again one couple nesting there.
Cheers,
Cristina.

Hello,
regarding to butterflies I usually use this guidebook:
"Petita guia de les papallones diurnes de Mallorca"
Although it is from 2014 I think is quite useful and it has a list at last page.
Regards,
Cristina.

Thanks Cristina
I did know about this but had forgotten to mention it. It's a useful booklet, especially as it has illustrations.
There are a few differences in the list that I posted, so plenty of work still to be done on the Balearic butterflies (even more on the moths, where the list is in the region of 950 species!).

Thanks Christina - I won't get too optimistic then (although you never know!). I hope to call in to La Gola and say hello next week.

Managed to sort my photo's from my 2 weeks in P Pollensa. As usual I had a great time birding and it's always good to catch up with local birders as well as those on holiday.
Hope to return soon.
Micky

Great photos Micky! I went to Castell de Santueri shortly after you told me of your visit - I saw the Blue Rock Thrush a couple of times, but could not locate the nest site. Only got a couple of photos, this one was on the top of the Castle wall. But it was worth a visit. A Peregrine was cruising around in front of the car park too.

Thanks everyone for the great reports and photos, some super birds.
Traveling to the USA was great with many wonderful and impressive things to see, especially Yosemite but there is no place like home.
I have just got back from Mondrago where I stood listening to Nightingales singing everywhere, followed by the high pitched screeching of the many Stone Curlew, a Scops owl joined in and then my hoped for Nightjars began churring. There were at least three so this is a good showing following two poor years. I am going Sunday to the breeding site to get a more accurate number but it’s looking, and sounding, good. Mike
Ps Martin. I am going to a site in Ses Salines soon to photograph some moths so I hope to have something to report. Sorry for the lack of action on my part.

Dragonera

A wonderful June day visit to this NP.
We walked slowly to Far de Tramuntana lighthouse and back.
Birds seen included Serins, Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Yellow legged Gulls (and Chicks), Ravens, Booted Eagle, Sardinian Warblers, Blue Rock Thrush, Common Swifts, Crossbills, Cirl Buntings,Shags and cormorants. No Shearwaters seen.

Only one Eleonoras Falcon seen but at least 14 Balearic Warblers seen or heard.
Never Seen so many of these; many young ones showing no fear.(I used an early photo as I was just enjoying the wonderful views)

Amazing plants and scenery

And a few Dragons for company.

Mike

It's a great place and home to a species of moth that I described (with a colleague) which was new to Science. I've since found it on Cabrera - another great place.
Martin

Last two evenings around S’Albuferata and Can Cuarasa.
Birds seen included Night Herons, Cattle Egrets, Great White Egrets, Purple Herons, Stone Curlews, Nightingales, Kestel, Red Footed Partridges, Serins, Goldfinches, Stonechats, Yellow Wagtails, Cetti and Fan tailed warblers. So many Swifts.
I am going to miss this place
Mike
