Your Most Recent "Life" Bird (12 Viewers)

Red-knobbed Coot in the eastern Algarve yesterday - I wouldn't like to try and pick one out amongst a flock of common coots, in winter at long range - less distinctive than I expected even in breeding plumage.
My life list is 'under maintenance' at the moment, as I try and get everything onto eBird, and check some of my old records - so I've no idea what number this takes me too...

Only one tick today in Thailand on a travelling day - Common Woodshrike (154th for the trip). It is common in India. It is not common in Thailand....

Its Thai name translates as White-browed Woodshrike. Alternatively, an eponym may work better.... 😅

A photo tick was Black-throated Laughingthrush.

Now in Kaeng Krachan for two days which I have visited before & then heading further south which will be exciting and should be more productive. Hoping to get through the night without any nightmares over the fact that I saw two Coral-billed Ground-cuckoos both yesterday and today but on both occasions failed to get a pic. A gripping pic from Khao Yai yesterday will probably result in tears before bedtime. 😪

All the best

Paul

Three lifers today at Kaeng Krachan in Thailand but Blue Pitta eluded my camera & Red-throated Barbet & Grey Peacock-pheasant were heard only. Attempts to remedy such things tomorrow.... Peacock-pheasant was the last. (Two major targets unphotographed - the Ground-cuckoo & the Pitta - feels like a bit of a failure despite both being astonishing birds.)

Red-bearded Bee-eater & White-browed Piculet were photo ticks though.

All the best

My last lifer today was Ratchet-tailed Treepie at the higher elevations of Kaeng Krachen National Park, Thailand. Now 166 lifers for the trip.

Other new birds today included White-fronted Scops Owl, Black-thighed Falconet, Dusky Broadbill & Chestnut-breasted Malkoha.

We have a travelling day south from Kaeng Krachen tomorrow before five and a half dsys birding in the south. Hopeful for something tomorrow & many new birds should follow from Sunday....

All the best

Despite today being a travel day, six lifers in Thailand bringing the trip total to 172 lifers. The last was Slaty-breasted Rail - no pic - but previous lifers today included Jungle Myna, Banded Woodpecker & Little Bronze-Cuckoo. A big day planned tomorrow with our first forest birding in the south which should bring rewards if things go to plan...

All the best

Day 17 Thai Trip (10th March) delivered on its promise down south with 28 lifers as my Thai List climbed to 581 species. My last tick of the day was Buffy Fish Owl previously dipped despite searching on both trips at Khao Yai. My 13th Thai Owl species. 😀

But star of the show was Malayan Banded Pitta & some other crackers with Hairy-backed Bulbul, Whiskered Treeswift & Rufous-collared Kingfisher.

All the best

My last tick today was Ruddy Kingfisher being one of eleven new birds seen with a 500+ Trip list & a Thai List closing in on 600. Otherwise today included Mangrove Pitta (maybe better pics the day after tomorrow), Olive-winged Bulbul, Black-bellied Malkoha & Sooty Barbet.

All the best

My last tick today was White-crowned Hornbill. One of eleven ticks bringing the trip to 222 ticks from 517 species. Other new birds included Red-billed Malkoha, Gould's Frogmouth & Mugimaki Flycatcher but other non-tick quality of male & female Malayan Banded Pitta & Banded Kingfisher kept us busy.

😀

A couple of days to go....

All the best

My last tick today was Spotted Wood Owl (my 14th Thai Owl) on a day with 8 lifers including Brown-winged Kingfisher, River Lapwing and Asian Glossy Starling and some nice non-lifer Mangrove Pitta action. Sadly only 1.5 days' birding left.

All the best

My last tick of seven lifers today was a juvenile Red-throated Sunbird. A upgrade to a male would be nice on my last morning tomorrow.

Slightly more memorable were Rufous Piculet, Pin-tailed Parrotfinch & Yellow-bellied Bulbul amongst others. Saddest experience was seeing what is now a Gurney's Pitta shrine to a species now extinct in Thailand and facing an unknown future in Myanmar....

All the best

I’m sure you must have sat on the saturation button Paul!
I’ll now have to buy a new pair of sun glasses. 🤣👍

No I usually look like that....

(Difficult to get much predictability on such things using a phone to photograph the back of a camera! Looking forward to getting some proper editing done at some point!)

All the best

My last and probably final lifer of my Thai trip - 239th of 550 trip list - Ferruginous Babbler. Journey home has started via Bangkok Airport & a few hours at a hotel tomorrow morning but likely to recover rather than chase the one or two possibles...

All the best

Paul

I have only 220 species on my life list so far, so it's still so easy to acquire new life bird on any vacation! I just returned from Malaysia, I saw 5 species of hornbill. They are majestic creatures. Not only their bills, their behavior, the beauty of their flight. 100% would recommend :)
