Scilly Helicopter prices 2007 (1 Viewer)

Dont know where you flew into but I've never had a problem.

Ha! This is the answer - get a few of those obnoxious buffoons that have made me decide never to visit the US again, even in transit! Let 'em act as crew on the inter-islanders, now that'd be fun!

Queues down the quayside, birders treated like cattle rather than human beings, insults thrown in your face.. heck, who'd notice any difference apart from the accent???

With respect to the prices issues of flying, the C02 can't help but be an issue also, and it's also linked in with time. You make your decisions on a variety of factors.

If it cost the same to go the other end of europe by train as it did by air, you'd consider it a lot more (and assuming you have the time - maybe not an option in the minimal holiday rat race way of things), but when it's only £10 or so to fly, why pay hundreds?

I'd personally be very happy to take the slow boat to the US or wherever, but that's not even an option. When I saw the ryanair prices to the Canaries recently (that's one of the £10 options) I thought there must be a ferry (and a pelagic trip built in!), but the prices I've found so far on the internet were around the £1200 mark. . . . not really an option for me, funnily enough!

Everything goes higher technology, and more pricey.

Guess we'll just have to wait for the oil to run out . . . not too long to wait maybe, if peak oil kicks in within the next couple of years!

Congratulations! I wonder if it is that sort of attitude and lifestyle that has contributed to the current global ecological mess we are now experiencing ;)

Highly unlikely my attitude and lifestyle is contributing to the so-called mess, probably the contrary, but I'll let you believe how you wish.

PS. the 'don't give a toss' remark requires a slight edit: it should have read 'To be honest, I don't really give a toss if you approve or not, so you can carry on feeling sorry for me.

Scilly is pricing itself out of the market, its lost me as a regular at last. And overall I have to say they must be losing money they could get hold of - I remember the boatmen taking over 900 people for Philly Vireo on the Sunday: think of that, 900 birders with accommodation needs, food needs, beer needs (especially after that vireo!) transport needs - that wasn't by any means the only decent rarity that year.

Last time I stayed on there (two years ago before the prices drove me off) there were no more than 250 birders in total and it was probably less. And the average skill level had dropped by 90%.

The regular price hiking is killing the golden goose: the inter-island boats are now too much for people to island-hop to look for birds, its not worth visiting off-islands unless you know something is there. The accommodation is ludicrously expensive, which is why so few birders are staying compared to the mid-eighties. You can always find a table in the Bishop, Mermaid or Atlantic: I remember when you had to let the bloke next to you know you planned to raise your glass to your mouth so he could shuffle out of the way a bit!

You can't tell me that the islanders are making more money from the number of visitors they get now. They take more off each individual but they don't get the total they used to.

Which is why, sadly, I am reduced to twitching the place when I would rather be enjoying a fortnight of trying to find my own rarities and shooting the breeze with the guys in the pub of an evening.

the freak weather and general climatic conditions we are experiencing are just part of a weather system..........after all the planet has experienced worse ;)

Ignorence is bliss after all!

;)

I am glad you see it my way - but I do urge you to check out the history of climatic change over the last x number of thousands of years - This is cyclic and this is not new - we just think it is because man has been on this planet for such a small amount of time , and yet we think we know everything. I am in no way saying that what we are doing globally has not accelerated the change , but I am also not naive enough to think that we can slow the acceleration down at such an alarming rate.

FYI I do all that I can on a personal level (apart from my Car ;) ), so your Ignorance is bliss was way off the mark this time , sometimes however, realism is favorable to the moral high ground

All the best

I assume you cycle EVERYWHERE ??? o:)

No, not at all Archie. I think the more people consider this seriously everytime they plan a trip the more chance we have of not completely knackering up the planet.

Yawn ..... will we make a difference .... er NO .. planets dying so enjoy ..

cheers

John

Having not been to the Scillies in October since the late 80's it is disappointing to hear that so few people now go. No wonder there is a drought of Yankie passerines. Now I'm back "in the thick of it" I hope to get at least once this October, but can't do anymore due to work committments.

Dont think the helicopter or plane service will go bankrupt if birders boycott them this october! All we do is make the tourist season longer. I share a cottage with 3 or 4 other birders on the last week of october every year. That costs about £75. The return flights on the plane from lands end is £125 plus £34 car parking. So £234, plus food and beer and the occasional island hop i'm looking at about £300-350 for the week. I dont consider that a massive amount for a great weeks sociallising with like minded people, getting drunk (occasionally), no work and generally good birding. Not only all that but October on the Scillies is part of birdings cultural history. Its all about actually being there. Like September on Fair Isle, narrows watching at Spurn or visiting Nancy's Cafe on a trip to North Norfolk. (when it was there obviously)Wish I'd been old enough to be around in the real great past years on Scilly.
The helicopter prices are going up again next year. The new prices will be out in October. You'll be glad to know i go FREE on the chopper when i work out there!!!! Heres hoping for an attachment there in October!

Hope you weren't there when i was. Wouldn't want to be classed as below average skill level! Where did you come up with that figure? I know what you mean but i wouldn't say 90% John. Thats a bit of an insult to quite a lot of birders. I was there with four very experienced birders and know of at least another ten or so other good birders on the islands at the time. And those were the ones i know personally, not to mention the ones who i dont. Okay so there are quite a few dudes, accepted, but equally as many newish birders who may be experiencing the islands for the first time. We all have to start somewhere. Are you refering to rarity finders when you say skill level? That i would agree with. But that is countrywide. Lots of new birders under pressure from their peers to get bigger lists.
The upside to this pricing is that there are fewer birders therefore more chance of finding your own rarity!

Yeah but you dont get cold salty water down your neck on a 747 do you. ;)

Rather the cold salty water (and a few seabirds) than the cold icy stare of a lobotomised US airport staffer... and I still wouldn't even board a boat bound for Unkie Samland either, they'll be just as many tinpot toytown sheriffs at the docks I bet... time that Statue was rebuilt with both arms in the air to show how to surrender all liberties to be allowed in..

P'raps the Scilly boatmen can start smuggling birders straight over to Ding Darling? Think what they could charge for that? Then imagine four dour illegal Yorkie tick-hungry listers vs. Crockett'n'Tubbs - I know who my money's on..

Or save your money and do a degree at UEA.

I'm 35 with wife and kid mate! Did the uni thing 17yrs ago! Wish i'd have got a student loan and blown it all on optics now though, the degree is not worth jack s**t. Did twitch quite a bit in Norfolk though. Oriental Pratincole in a clapped out honda civic was a great trip!

agree with you here. (34 without wife and kid tho), degree useless. Pratincole top bird!

So can I take it you don't like Americans then? Is it all Americans or just the airport staff?

(Ignoring his better judgement not to get involved . . . ;) )

I'll leave the man himself to reassure you that he loves Americans in general . . . .

I think there is a slightly poor perception generally on the incoming customs/ immigration side of things. I know when I came over for a few months back in 2000 I was questioned a bit at length, mostly because I was a single male with rucksack looking a bit rough from lack of sleep I think . . . as a welcoming commitee the customs experience is not exactly the ideal you could hope for . . . . and its obviously not gotten any better with the situation after the events of recent years.

There was moresoever that recent unfortunate incident when a 'Popular and Highly Regarded Cultural Emissary' from this country, Lily Allen, was 'turned away' from your shores and thus unable to gain entry. This was due to an alleged minor incident involving a paparezzi in the UK some months earlier I believe . . . . . . I guess it may be this incident preying on his mind which may have colored his recent outbursts . . . . ;)

As for me, I had a great time once I was allowed in the country . . . most of the people most of the time great or ok, and the birding too :t:

And one thing you know for sure is he definately loves the ACCENT OR something. . . ;)

Living in a socialist country (Vietnam) I might be missing something here, but isn't it all about supply and demand???

Silly me, I typed westboard when I meant eastbound. UZ (Uzbeckistan) doesn't have any shores. ;)

As for Lily Allen? I've been away too long and dont have a clue????????????
