    Nesting Activity

Our Great Tits had a clutch of 11 eggs and 9 chicks left the nest box a couple of weeks ago. They have decided to raise a second brood and female is currently sitting on 6 eggs. Fingers crossed for another successful outcome. We also had blue tits nesting in a discarded nest box that I put by...

Question about Blue Tit Nest Box

We had a Great Tit in our nestbox last year and the male was absent throughout incubation of the eggs and afterwards. Never saw him in the box at all. The female did everything herself! She laid 6 eggs and managed to fledge 2 chicks. Wouldn't be too worried yet. May be dad isn't the...

    Nesting Activity

We have a Great Tit roosting in our nestbox. Today she has started bringing in moss and grass. I thought the cold weather might have delayed nest building for a week or two. I'm hoping she will complete the nest and raise a brood but there's a long way to go! Anybody else seeing activity in...

    Bluetits abandoned nest

It's very sad but is nature's way of ensuring survival of the fittest. We've had Blue Tits nesting in our box for most of the past 13 years or so. Some years the whole brood has died and it is distressing. This year we have Great Tits for the first time. All 6 eggs hatched but 3 chicks have...

Blue Tits Replaced by Great Tits

Camera back on today after being out of action for a week. Surprised to see 6 eggs in nest!

Blue Tits Replaced by Great Tits

Nice website and live feed. No viewing for me today - technical hitch which I need to fix!

Blue Tits Replaced by Great Tits

For the first time this year we installed a camera in our nestbox and have been watching with interest the comings and goings. In late March a pair of blue tits showed interest in the box and the female started bringing in nesting material. However her nest building was fairly slow and by the...

    Early Nesting Robin

I was surprised to see our resident robin start building a nest last Friday 11 February in an open fronted nest box in our Leylandi hedge. She continued adding material Saturday, had a rest on Sunday (weather wet all day) and continued today. This robin is quite tame and will take dried...

    Sad end for Mr Fox-photos

A fascinating thread which brought to mind the titles of 2 Roald Dahl books which I remember reading to my kids when they were younger - Fantastic Mr Fox and The Twits!

What you hoping for this year?

Have had blue tits nesting most years with variable success. Last year the chicks died in the nestbox. Saw a pair of BTs prospecting yesterday so I'm hoping they take up residence and are successful raising a brood.

    Which nesting material ?

Hi Barnstormer - You've probably thought of this but have you positioned the nestboxes so the entrance holes are facing away from the prevailing wind/rain direction? I think you might struggle to attract nesting birds if they don't have a tree to fly into from which they can drop down into the...

Do Long Tail Tits use Nesting boxes?

Saw a LTT on our peanut feeder today - first time I've seen that.

    Balding Bluetit

We have blue tits nesting in our nestbox and the female has been sitting on eggs for around 10 days. I noticed today that she is looking a bit rough - the headfeathers seem to be disappearing. Is this just a normal moult or could she have some parasites that are causing the feathers to drop...

Coal Tit finds new nest site.

Birds always have a habit of surprising you! Must be nice not to have to get out of bed to watch the coal tits comings and goings.

    Nesting Boxes

All this talk of nuthatches has reminded me of an amusing nest I came across many years ago. A nuthatch had, in time honoured tradition, plastered the tree nest hole entrance with mud - well I thought it was mud at first but on closer inspection realised it was horses manure! Pooh, those were...

Is it too late for nestbox-choosing by birds?

I think that's the right decision Sancho. You could always put up an extra box in your garden if you have room - maybe with a bigger or smaller hole size, facing another direction and at a different height. No harm in giving them a choice of dez rez! Good luck.

Is it too late for nestbox-choosing by birds?

I've had a nestbox in the same pear tree since 1999 with mixed success. Blue tits have nested there 7 years on the trot with 4 successful years and 3 failures. The last 2 years I've had nothing but this year a blue tit has started nest building so fingers crossed. I remember one year that it...

    Nice Surprise

Hi Nina I've been lucky enough to see a few treecreepers over the years but never seen one in our garden. Yes the wren is a lovely bird to listen to. A big voice for one so small!

Hi Young Ian Nice one. Glad you managed to keep your car out of the ditch!

    Nice Surprise

We usually have the same birds visiting our suburban garden - blue tits, sparrows, starlings, robins etc - nothing too spectacular. So it was a really nice surprise a few weeks ago when a male bullfinch paid us a visit. Such striking plumage. Beautiful! He stayed for 10 to 15 minutes eating...

    The Pied Predator

When I was a kid (many moons ago!) Magpies were mainly seen in the woods and fields near where I lived in South Wales. Nowadays they seem to be everywhere. You see their unmistakeable dome-shaped nests in parks, gardens and roadside hedgerows. They are also frequent visitors to garden feeding...

    Blackbird or Song Thrush

It's great to see the weather improving and the days getting longer - Spring is definitely my favourite season. It's also uplifting to hear the early morning songsters again. Where I live there are 3 main players - blackbirds, thrushes and robins. My favourite is the blackbird. What's yours?

    Does anyone

What a fascinating story. I think it proves that birds and nature in general will always come up with something unexpected and pose a puzzle for the experts! Welsh Warbler P.S I'm extremely envious, as there is not much happening in my garden at present lol
