Bill Oddie like him or loathe him

I love the Birding with Bill Oddie series, recorded them all when they were on UKTV Documentary recently and find them perfect as a late evening relaxing (and informative!) watch. What I could do without, however, are the Oddie endorsed products and advertisments, just seems a bit cheap to me.

    Parkgate(Wirral)

The old baths carpark at Parkgate would be ideal from about 5pm today in fact, because there's an organised raptor watch there! Anyone else planning to go? :eat:

    Birding breadth vrs. birding depth

How to be a bad birdwatcher is definitely worth a look, an entertaining and inspiring read. I absolutely loved it and can highly recommend the companion volume, the bad birdwatchers companion, although that is a bit more brit-centric than Simon Barnes first book. How to be a bad birdwatcher...

What's been in your garden today?

Had my first positive id of a Dunnock in the garden today, not just the excitement of a new bird in the garden, but the added excitement of being able to differentiate between a dunnock and a sparrow despite being colourblind! :eat:

    Mersey Estuary

Wirral is getting all dug up for its own event, namely the Open Golf Championship next year. Everything has been planned around it, even the school year timetable has been changed to accomodate golf. The latest most disruptive digging up is between a hospital and cemetary, not a good...

    A Water Rail showing off.

Only once, at RSPB Inner Marsh Farm, have I seen a Water Rail for longer than a few seconds. On this occasion the rail settled itself down on the closest island to the hide, in full view, preened and then settled down for a nap! The bird only moved when startled by some of the reserve sheep...

    Spurn online

Hi Garry, Yep, that's nailed it, looks the same in ie and firefox now, nice one on getting it sorted so quickly.

    Spurn online

Hi Garry, you might want to check browser usage stats before dismissing the wishes of a significant percentage of your site visitors to have the site display correctly in their browser of choice. I also use firefox, so out of 13 current responses to this thread 3 would like to be using firefox...

common birds that light your candle

Curlews, they makes my day if I get to see and even better hear one while I'm out and about. It's the bird that got me to want to start watching as I tried to find the bird that was making THAT call and I still love them now.

    Equipment you Use?

Coming late with my response to the pocket pc question I'm afraid, but I'll give my opinion since it was asked for ;) At the moment I use an O2 xda IIi, mainly because I was able to blag it as a free upgrade at contract renewal time! It is handy having one item for everything (pocket pc and...

What's been in your garden today?

Have just had my first ever long tailed tit visitors to my garden, 3 of them taking a fancy to a suet block. Yes, I know they're common, but they're still a garden first for me and sometimes you've just got to tell someone who may appreciate the news! :t:

    An odd kind of Treecreeper

Definitely a magic moment Colin, water rails are a favourite bird of mine. My own water rail magic moment happened last month at Inner Marsh Farm, where the allegedly elusive and secretive rail decided to wander out of the reeds and settle down for a nap in full view of the hide, only moving...

    Equipment you Use?

For me it would have to be my pocket pc, a one stop shop birdwatching accessory! It's a notepad for making lists or field sketches, a recorder for birdsongs I can't place (of which there are many more than those I can!) and a camera for quick snaps that can even be used with scope at a push. I...

RE: wireless device for instant messaging

Best to go with a smartphone, either treo or a window mobile powered phone. I use a pocket pc phone which I keep connected on GPRS. I have a freeware program on that called agile messenger, which means I can be connected to yahoo, icq and google talk all at the same time. When I can get a wi-fi...

    Something doesn't look right here

It does indeed seem that the eyecups were the culprit Henry. The demo model I tried of the opticron discovery had stiff eyecups, so I'd thought I was pulling them all the way out when I wasn't! I tried with a stock pair and it worked a dream. Once I had it set up right I was very happy indeed...

    Something doesn't look right here

I've been looking for my first vaguely decent pair of binoculars today at my local supplier. With a £150 budget options were limited, but its time to replace my old Chinon 8x30's with something a little better! I was aiming for a pair of 8x42's and had a few to choose from in the price range...

    Anything about?

Just thought I'd say hello with a standard hide greeting :-) I've recently stepped up from being a casual, looking out for my favourites while on holiday birder to broadening my birding interest. Only problem is I'm colour blind, which makes indentification that bit more tricky! Have come to...
