Where premium quality meets exceptional value. ZEISS Conquest HDX.

Are you Going to buy the new Zeiss Conquest HDX Binoculars? (3 Viewers)

the ED or FL glass should be the most effective at reducing CA and a longer focal length helps. Herman is probably right about the phase coatings not having any part in reducing CA, but info all over the web conflicts. Yes, I too hope others can confirm a yes or no about this.
I don't read any of the technical books on optics like Herman so he probably has the real knowledge on this.
I don't either. I am not that dedicated. Everything I have learned has been from Bird Forum, and some of that could be incorrect! :)

What binoculars have longer focal lengths that would control CA better? Does an AK or SP prism make any difference in controlling CA?

You don't think BF members are the target market for the Zeiss Conquest HDX? I would think these binoculars would have a lot of appeal for BF members and birders in general. Do you think they are more targeted at hunter's? Thanks for the post!
Couple thoughts. BF/bino sub section is a small cohort of binocular enthusiasts as compared to the worldwide market for binoculars. Many here already have had experiences with Conquests. Many own still. There's lots of compliments here about them. Little controversy, other than that longer thread about where they're being made. Those that have not owned have had a month at the rather nice discount to catch up. As a relative closed community, we were better informed than most (in the larger market) as to what was going on so had a better chance to act on those discounts. If thats all correct, many of us already have a Conquest. Therefore only the most committed buyers and collectors (not the same) here, will want to run out and buy an HDX assuming what little we know about the difference holds. Its that much larger group of potential buyers worldwide, hunters, birders, general users that are shopping for a binocular at the $1000, price point that will now see this new and improved version of the Conquest, and compare it to the others in that class, like say Monarch HG, etc. Zeiss is not targeting us. It is targeting the potential worldwide purchaser of a 1000 dollar bino.

Yes, you are correct. Bird Forum is nothing compared to the worldwide market for these binoculars. It will be interesting to see how they do in that market. I wonder if Swarovski or Leica will fight back with some competition for the HDX?

I think it's really the ED/FL glass in the objective lenses that are most effective for reducing CA. A forum expert can comment on AK vs SP prisms and CA...I have no idea about that.

I've read many times here that focal length can help a bit to cut down CA. I had hoped the longer Trinovid HD 32 would have good CA control compared to Uvid 32 (or match it), but it seems worse. I guess the Trinovid HD doesn't have a high quality ED glass in it like in the alphas especially Zeiss.

Here is a seller on eBay that has the Zeiss Conquest HDX 8x32 in hand and ready to ship for $924.05 plus shipping. Should I order, should I order?

It makes me wonder if there is much difference between the ED glass the manufacturers like Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica and Nikon use in their alpha binoculars. I know they use cheaper glass in their lower end binoculars. I wonder what % of the cost of a binocular is due to the glass, and how much more the excellent Scott and Hoya ED glass cost the manufacturers over the less expensive glass.

I recall some of the more knowledgeable members here saying FL glass is expensive; the FL lenses in the top binoculars.

Don't waste your time. These will pale in comparison to the Nikon MHG's.

I think the FL glass is expensive. I don't know for sure, but I bet the quality of glass in binoculars plays a major part in their retail price because there are so many lenses.

"Examples of some glass processes that vary significantly within the manufacturing process:
  • Glass source i.e., Japan, Germany, China
  • Glass type i.e., BK7, BaK-4
  • Processes i.e., grinding, polishing
  • Use of additional glass constituents i.e., ED, fluorite
  • Lens assembly i.e., number of lenses, groups, placement
  • Prism type, i.e., roof or Porro"

I've just ordered the 8x32 HDX this morning also from LKN for the same price (about 1376 AUD) ...interestingly the HD model was virtually the same price! They have 1 left. Beware they are Queensland based though, I think. Hopefully I will get it in a few days...

It is funny, Australia already has the HDX in stock. Usually the UK gets new Zeiss models first, it seems. Let us know what you think of them when you get them. The shipping on the HDX which was LKN on eBay was only $31.83 so not bad from Australia. Thanks for your response!

Maybe they're shipping directly from Japan. I'm looking forward to the first review on HDX's. Rokslide still hasn't posted the HDX review.

Zeiss informed me to check with dealers in mid-October for the new HDX. They might have a lot of old HD stock that they have to move until then.

You can get the HDX from the eBay seller right now.

That’s fine and dandy if you live in Australia.
