January 1st joint Birdforum list (2016 edition) (1 Viewer)

Here's a better "wants list" for Team UK - these are birds that were on one or both of the 2 previous year's UK lists but haven't so far been reported for 1st Jan this year:

Bewick's Swan
Bittern
Black Guillemot
Black Redstart
Blyth's Pipit
Cetti's Warbler
Crossbill
Dipper
Glaucous Gull
Great Grey Shrike
Grey Partridge
Grey Phalarope
Hen Harrier
Hooded Crow
Little Bustard
Little Owl
Long-tailed Duck
Mealy Redpoll
Merlin
Parrot Crossbill
Pomarine Skua
Red Kite
Red-crested Pochard
Richard's Pipit
Ring-necked Duck
Spoonbill
Two-barred Crossbill
Velvet Scoter
Wheatear
White-tailed Eagle
Woodcock
Yellow-legged gull

I saw grey partridge a day too early and long-tailed duck a day too late. Typical...

Excuse me, I did report Cetti's Warbler and you have included it in your alphabetical list at post 52. Happy New Year!

A couple of additions to Richard Prior's European list from Ireland yesterday:

Red-throated Diver
Fulmar
Oystercatcher
Curlew
Turnstone
Guillemot
Kittiwake
Med Gull
Herring Gull
Meadow Pipit
Rock Pipit
Pied Wagtail (if counted as a split)

So Team UK is now on 149 and Team Europe 162. Team USA meanwhile have an impressive 204.
Europe other than the UK is now on 90, with the Europe total unchanged on 162.

It hadn't really occurred to me to specify a taxonomy to use, although it's probably only Europe where it's not obvious which should apply. I realise I've been subconsciously using BOU, so splitting hooded crow but not pied wagtail. This probably isn't the right forum to debate that, but if anyone knows of a good reason why pied wagtail should count separate from white, do tell...

IOC is the obvious one to use, as it's international, unlike BOU or AOU.

In case you don't already have them, the four most interesting birds (of a grand total of just 10 species) recorded by me in Helsinki on 1 January were: Eurasian Pygmy Owl, White-backed Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Azure Tit.

How difficult is the Azure Tit? I looked up the place its reported and it seemed to be a huge reedbed.

I can add Sandhill Crane to the US list. We have a local population that winters over here in Colorado. They're fun to see when the snow covers the fields.
