Loch of the Lowes Ospreys 2009

Although a juvenile has been known to catch a fish within three days of leaving the nest most young birds do not catch a fish before they leave on migration. this idea that young ospreys have to be taught to fish is a myth as is demonstated by the translocation programmes.

Loch of the Lowes Ospreys 2009

They usually fledge between 50 to 57 days after hatching. The first chick hatched on 16th May. Thus we reach 50 days on 5th July. I guess we can expect a fledge any time from then on. I have seen a fledge on 49 days so I guess 4th July is possible. The latest fledge I have seen is 66days.

Loch of the Lowes Ospreys 2009

Well we already knew the answer. Over at Loch Garten Bloggers Alison reported: I've got a reply from LOTL! " 'Eric’ was originally thought to be from Loch Garten before we could see his ring number properly with our high definition camera, but as it turns out he is from Glenshee. So the...

Loch of the Lowes Ospreys 2009

Over on the RSPB Loch Garten blog there is a post which suggests that Eric is a son of Ollie the legendary Loch Garten osprey. Does anyone know if this is true? See post by Lamarck at...

I just been looking at the 2008 diary of this nest and there is no mention of ringing the chick.

Loch of the Lowes Ospreys 2009

In the UK they say ringing but in the USA it is called banding. I would imagine that ringing of these chicks should be due in about 10 to 14 days. It depends on a lot of factors but the main one is that there is no chance of the chicks jumping out of the nest.

Loch of the Lowes Ospreys 2009

I know what you are saying Sue but that is the only video I had to hand. In my mind I have seen the situation many times before and in every case the chick has always righted itself. Now we can add the current case to the examples where this was the outcome too.

Loch of the Lowes Ospreys 2009

Well I have never seen a chick come to harm because of being on its back. Some have been on their back for a very long time. Did it have a big meal earlier?
