Day 18 of the trip was the first of two consecutive days at sea. The first has gone so well that maybe pressure may be on tomorrow to keep the run of days with a tick going. Six lifers took me to 157 lifers from a trip list of 283 species. A day with some challenges with the camera but in the end, I was pleased with the majority of the results.

Chatham Albatrosses that I had last seen around Pyramid rock wheeled around the boat now nearly 6,000 kilometres away off the coast of Chile & White-bellied Storm-Petrols mono-ski'd on one leg. A constant backdrop of Juan Fernandez & Masatierra Petrels were joined by the occasional Kermadec Petrel. Meanwhile, Hammerhead Sharks passed under the ship. Today, really was one of my best ever says birding.

409. Pomarine Skua 23 Mar 2025 Offshore Chile

Day 19 of the trip added Cocos Booby, Parkinson's Petrel & Peruvian Tern to my life list. Apparently, Nazca Booby, Elliot's Petrel & Waved Albatross were also seen. Clearly, I did not do well today. These would also have been ticks but hopefully the misses will be redeemed at some point.

Day 24 of 40 was pretty unsuccessful with my camera in the heat of the day for a few hours ashore at Mantt, Ecuador but Ecuador was an entirely new country & even the commonest birds were new if I had not seen them in Peru or Costa Rica. Good variety produced 15 lifers taking me to 192 lifers from a trip list now of 391 species. The yearlist also climbed significantly sailing through 500 species...

Yes. The main appeal is the seabirds. We are down south at the end of July/August in Peru. I was interested in seeing a bit of other countries as well. Costa Rica tomorrow. The Merlin Bird Pack for Costa Rica tells me that I have 147 World ticks remaining of the 818 species in that pack as I have done an intensive trip there but there are maybe 3 or 4 possibles for me tomorrow on land.

Of course, a number of these countries have massive diversity & it differs massively depending on areas visited so I have 816 remaining World ticks of the 1,803 species in the Peru pack...

All the best

Day 25 of 40 was spent entirely at sea. I recorded 15 species in Colombian waters & 8 species in Panamanian waters. Four lifers were Christmas, Galapagos & Wedge-tailed Shearwaters & White Tern.

A significant proportion of the day was spent trying to identify Band-rumped from Leach's Storm-Petrels - very difficult even with good views & also dark-rumped Leach's from Markham's Storm-Petrels. This was despite starting the day with a Band-rumped Storm-Petrel in the hand. A seabird or two can usually be found around the decks before dawn having come aboard overnight.

Other than a surprise flyover Scarlet Tanager those were the year ticks as the lifers went to 196 species from a trip list of 399 species.

529. Leach's Storm-Petrel 30 Mar 2025 At sea, Colombia
530. Band-rumped Storm-Petrel 30 Mar 2025 At sea, Colombia
531. Wedge-tailed Shearwater 30 Mar 2025 At sea, Colombia
532. White Tern 30 Mar 2025 At sea, Colombia
533. Galapagos Shearwater 30 Mar 2025 At sea, Colombia
534. Christmas Shearwater 30 Mar 2025 At sea, Colombia
535. Scarlet Tanager 30 Mar 2025 At sea, Colombia

A few pics - Wedge-tailed Shearwater (two pics) Red-billed Tropicbird, Nazca Booby, Leach's Storm-Petrel (white & dark-rumped birds), Markham's Storm-Petrel, American Black Tern, Galapagos Petrel, Sea Turtle species, Band-rumped Storm-Petrel (two pics including in the hand), Christmas Shearwater, Pygmy Beaked Whale, Swallow-tailed Gull (two pics), Cocos Booby, Red-footed Booby, Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel & Flying Fish species.

All the best

Day 26 of 40 was always going to see a significant number of new species even in the heat of the day - some only heard. Costa Rica has significant biodiversity. Despite a Costa Rican list over 500 species already, 4 lifers was pleasing. The day started with a calling Upland Sandpiper in the dark as I checked the decks for stranded seabirds. Six Wedge-tailed Shearwaters had come aboard overnight. Most mornings produce some seabirds attracted to the lights that need to be returned to their normal lives from the interruption.

Today was a reminder why I would never book a tour such as this just for the type of birding at Carara NP. Too many people to bird in any way normally. Significantly impaired opportunities to look for & stay on birds. Too much noise. People in front of you. Confusion. Misdirection. But thankfully, seeing most birds contained no jeopardy for me. The overall positioning & strengths & weaknesses of different tour companies & where they are positioned within the market fascinates me. Just prefer not to be the guinea pig learning by personal experience at times. 😀

But an exceptionally good day & perfection is never possible though it should be more of an aim than it seems to be.... 🤣

A few pics - Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Magnificent Frigatebird, American Redstart, Rose-throated Becard, Rufous-backed Wren, Common Ground Dove, Hoffman's Woodpecker, Short-tailed Hawk, Orange-fronted Parakeet, Mangrove Hummingbird, Streaked Flycatcher, Dot-winged Antwren, Black-hooded Antshrike, Orange-collared Manakin, White-whiskered Puffbird, Eye-ringed Flatbill, White Ibis, Grey Hawk (immature), Slaty-tailed Trogon & Rufous Piha.
