Which 10x binoculars to pair up my SLC 8x42? (1 Viewer)

Someon can probably date those from the sn. Optically the older models are very good - essentially same resolution and edge performance as current nes, bt they can have a yellow tint to the view, and ren't as bright due to the lack of modern coatings.
Thank you very much for your kind reply πŸ™‚ From another thread I found that they made between 1962-1989 and they are not waterproof as current models. I hope that I can be repaired them from Swarovski if they are not in good collimation or with fungus (of course I will pay). I hope they have a resell value if I want to upgrade it later πŸ™‚

I just won a Swarovski Optik Tirol Habicht 10x40 (SN 161259) probably made between 1960-1980 from eBay auction. I know resent Swarovski Habitch got a lot of important over time. Do you have any experience with these older models and are they any good?
Congratulations! I really hope you won a good one. Don't have experience with the older Habicht's but it's always nice for the collection. I have four old Swift Porro binoculars and they still perform really good. Let us know how the old Habicht's perform.

Yesterday I have received them. The optics of the binoculars are good (with a known yellow tint in the image). The image though it seems better for me than the NL 8x42. I don't know the reason but I feel it has a more natural view.
However, unfortunately, the focus wheel doesn't work properly. It stuck when rotating it. I want to find a place close by (near Wuppertal, Germany) to get the repair done. If anybody knows such a place please let me know πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

That's very good news Viraj! The more natural view with the Habicht might be a result of the fact that you are looking through a Porro binocular that has no field flatteners? I'm not a optic specialist at all but i think (hope :)) the focus wheel can be repaired, it's a simpel construction. Maybe some cleaning and sweet loving care will do the trick, Good luck with your Habicht.

Still I can't understand why but I like the view trough porros. My first binocular was a reverse porro and I really liked it. With roofs I feel the view is much restricted and I can't see back and forth. Maybe the huge flat field of NL 8x42 gives me that uncomfortable feeling. I was thinking NL 10x32 or 10x42 would suit me more than 8x42. Yesterday I checked NL 10x42 with my NL 8x42. 10x42 was stable in my hands as good as 8x42. However, now I am thinking to buy a current version of Habicht 10x42. Old Habicht is good however the yellow tint is little too much for my liking.

@Richard D I will probably send it to Swarovski to repair. I don't think it is easy to find a place to repair it in the place I live. Actually I am quite new here.

I believe the Habicht’s would 10x40 not 42, the 7x is 42. I didn’t think you were going to like the yellow in the old Habicht, considering you have one of the best 8x42’s on the planet.

Yes, I did a mistake πŸ˜‚ It is 10x40.
According to many, NL is one of the best binoculars in the world but somehow I am missing something in it. Yesterday for the first time (we see each other rarely πŸ˜ƒ) my girlfriend used my NL and said it is the best view she ever had. She is not a binocular expert though. However, I feel the view through Habicht 10x40 is more comfortable. Maybe it is because of the magnification increase. It is also so light and comfortable in hand. This old model has smooth focuses wheel. I think the new one is much tighter because of the water proof sealing. As you mentioned the yellow tint is the biggest gripe except the problem in focus wheel.

Yes, the new ones have very tight focuser, but very smooth. There is absolutely no yellow in new Habicht’s. They’re like the NLs, very neutral, bright and sooo sharp. Nothing like the old ones. If you really like the porro view ( I think it’s overrated, I never miss it once I go to a roof) you should’ve considered a more modern interpretation like the Nikon E2 and/or the SE. I believe Mtn is selling a nice one right now at a very fair price.

There might be other reasons you don’t like the NLs as much. I’d research that first. Either that , or start buying all of them, that’s what I didπŸ€ͺ. I would say you might like the Leica’s better than NLs.

Stay tuned for my next bino acquisition. πŸ˜‰

Waterproofness and fewer blackouts are important to me. In that respect, I think Habicht is better. NL is producing more kidney beans and Habicht gives less eye fatigue than any roof I tried.

I don't know how to purchase binoculars from forum members. I tried but couldn't find that section on the website 😐

Sure. Will it be an SFL πŸ˜€

THEN CONSIDER A NIKON EDG, NO BLACKOUTS OR KIDNEY BEANS.

MY NEXT BINOCULARS, TWO 150mm astrophysics binocular scope. No blackouts , but a little heavy. But I should be able to see the heart beat of a perched osprey at 3/4 of a mile 😁

That's pretty interesting binoculars. Less pocketable though πŸ˜‚

Two issues with them, not water proof and don’t hang well from the neck strap 🫒

Hello folks,

Here is another update. I sold the CL 10x30 and bought a NL Pure 10x32. The CL 10x30 was nice at the beginning, but the narrow eyecups annoyed me after a while. The CL just wasn't very comfortable because of that. The optics were really nice, but the eyecups got me eventually. I wanted a pair of binoculars that will last a lifetime (or at least 10 years) and the CL 10x30 just wasn't good/comfortable enough to say that. I prefered the SLC 8x42 most of the time, but I am a 10 power person, so that's saying something. So eventually I decided to treat myself buying the best lightweight 10 power binos there are on the market now. I really think the NL Pure 10x32 are, although I did not try the Zeiss SF 10x32. I read about the blackouts. I am quite picky about eyecups (I did not like them on the EL 10x42 and I did not like them of the CL 10x30 either). I really love the eyecups of the NL pure because you can adjust them in 5 or 6 positions and they are big enough. Always a position that suits me the best at that moment. The SFL 10x40 would have been a nice pair as well. I did not try this one either and I am still curious. Maybe I will swap my SLC 8x42 for the SFL 8x40 once. The bigger FOV of the NL Pure 10x32 and the eyecups pulled me over the line. They are really nice to hold as well. Very comfortable!

I don't really like the bag, but that doesn't bother me. A tiny detail I don't like either is that when I remove the rainguard the eyecups come out a bit as well. So I have to readjust them. And what I finally really understand and see is glare. That is quite annoying as well. I only get it at sunset or dark conditions. So probably that will be the time when I do take the SLC 8x42 (had a bit glare as well but only at the borders). During daytime I think the NL Pure 10x32 is perfect! Really nice AFOV, although I expected more of it. It's even not that much bigger as the AFOV of the SLC 8x42. So I overrated that a bit. I measured 670 kg when I put them on a scale and that was without the caps, rainguard and strap. I don't understand why the specs say 640 kg...

A SLC 8x42 and a NL Pure 10x32. That will cover all the needs for a birder I think?
