Overview
Lake "Guelper See" is called "petrol station of migration birds". It said it is possible to see up to 200.000 wild geese in October.

Notable Species
The meadows adjacent to the Rivers Elbe and Havel (which flows into the former) are flooded in spring and often in autumn as well. This attracts large numbers of water birds, waders, geese and ducks and is also a popular feeding and roosting habitat for the Common Crane. White-tailed Eagle can be observed throughout the year, and several at one time can be seen on the ice when the lakes and rivers freeze in winter. Osprey Red Kite ad Black Kite are common in summer and from autumn to spring Rough-legged Buzzard and Great Grey Shrike can be seen throughout the area. In spring theEuropean Honey Buzzard returns.

Great Cormorant ( colony on the south-east shore of the lake )

Areas of Interest
In south of the lake is open meadow on the lake. If You come near slowly, You will see Geese. In the north east is reed ( see picture ). Lots of gooses flight over You from the reed. Lanius collurio is heard very often, Common Cuckoo sometimes.
If You have more time You can follow to north west to town Havelberg on river Havel and to Ruehstedt nearby Wittenberge. Ruehstedt had 32 Storks last year and get 69 young Storks.
Access and Facilities
From Rathenow is 6 km to north village Hohenauen. 7 km to west is empty street to Parey. There You can small channels, very wet meadows, forest. Follow to north after 6 km You will reach Guelpen. 3,5 km before is a watching tower in a wetland.
