Lake \"Guelper See\"

Overview

Lake "Guelper See" is called "petrol station of migration birds". It said it is possible to see up to 200.000 wild geese in October.

Birds

Notable Species

The meadows adjacent to the Rivers Elbe and Havel (which flows into the former) are flooded in spring and often in autumn as well. This attracts large numbers of water birds, waders, geese and ducks and is also a popular feeding and roosting habitat for the Common Crane. White-tailed Eagle can be observed throughout the year, and several at one time can be seen on the ice when the lakes and rivers freeze in winter. Osprey Red Kite ad Black Kite are common in summer and from autumn to spring Rough-legged Buzzard and Great Grey Shrike can be seen throughout the area. In spring theEuropean Honey Buzzard returns.

This place can be combined with others good birding spots. e.g. - the floodplains Elbtalauen on the River Elbe is just 20 km to the northwest - the last main Great Bustard breeding area in Germany around the village of Buckow is just 30 km to the southeast - the floodplains of the River Dosse depression Dosseniederung is only few km to the north.

On 16.05. I saw: Greylag Goose Red-breasted Goose Mallard Red Kite Common Buzzard,

Eurasian Hobby, Western Marsh Harrier, Common Goldeneye, Chaffinch, Eurasian Golden Oriole,

Eurasian Jay, Common Reed Warbler, Whinchat, Common Redstart, White Wagtail,

Yellow Wagtail very common, White Stork, Common Crane, Grey Heron very common, Eurasian Coot,
