Overview
North of Innsbruck in the northern calcareous Alps is the largest Nature Protection Area in Austria. Karwendel is a 720sq km area famous for its spectacular scenery with lakes, rivers and waterfalls, dense forest and open alpine meadows. There are high, rocky peaks reaching a maximum of 2700m at Bikkarspitze.
Birds
Notable Species
Birds of the area include typical mountain species such as Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon and Rock Ptarmigan, Alpine Accentor, Wallcreeper and Snow Finch.
The forests hold woodpeckers, Eurasian Pygmy Owl and Tengmalm's Owl, Crested Tit, Western Bonelli's Warbler and Citril Finch.

Reached by road from Innsbruck to the south or Pertisau to the east, there are many minor roads which enter the mountains in this area.
