Overview
A long, narrow lake with a delta at the northern end where the River Tarna enters and surrounded by seasonally flooded marshland, Lake Tarnasjon is a nature reserve and Ramsar Site in north-central Sweden.
Immediately around the lake there are reedbeds leading to birchwoods, botanically rich in summer and flooded in winter and further from the lake there is undisturbed spruce forest and nearby are the Vindelfjallen Mountains.
Birds
Notable Species
Whooper Swan and many ducks breed around the lake including Eurasian Wigeon, Common Teal, Greater Scaup and Common Scoter and Velvet Scoter, also waders such as Purple Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Ruff, Common Snipe and Great Snipe, and Red-necked Phalarope.
Raptors are common and Golden Eagle and Gyr Falcon breed, possibly also White-tailed Eagle.
The woodlands have Eurasian Eagle Owl and Great Grey Owl, Brambling and Willow Warbler and Arctic Warbler.

Brown Bear survive here as well as Otter and Wolverine, and Beaver has been reintroduced.
