Overview

Indian Cave State Park is a unit of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. It takes in over 3,000 acres/1214 hectares of hardwood forest situated on the banks of the Missouri River approximately 10 miles/16 km south of Brownville, Nebraska.

The Park offers a variety of opportunities for a visitor including birdwatching, hiking, biking, horse-back riding, camping, and picnicking to name a few. There is also a boat launching ramp for those wishing to take in the opportunities found on the river. Recreated historic buildings are also a part of the Park.

Offered are 22 miles of trails in the park with some for hiking, some for biking, and 16 miles of trails for equestrian use. [1]

Notable Species

The Park itself, as well as the county in which it is located, has many species reported as being sighted.

Indian Cave State Park has had 194 species reported sighted with the Snow Goose commanding the largest number sighted. As well, there are a total of 11 eBird Hotspots located in various areas within the park. [2]

Nemaha County, where the Park is located, has had 277 species reported along with 7 globally threatened species.[3]

The Western Meadowlark, which is the Nebraska State Bird, is recorded as being sighted in this area.

Rarities

While no rare species have been noted in the park itself, some of the least common sightings here include the Black-throated Green Warbler, Fox Sparrow, Solitary Sandpiper, Canada Warbler, Bell's Vireo, Great Egret, Pileated Woodpecker, and Spotted Sandpiper.[2]
