Overview
A sheltered tidal basin, Montrose Basin, an estuary of the South Esk river, takes in approximately 750 hectares/1850 acres. It's a location where thousands of migratory species are found.
Facilities found here along with the great habitat combine to make a notable birding location.
Birds
Notable Species
Notable species here include, in part, the Pink-footed Goose arriving in large numbers in Autumn. Large flocks of Scaup species can be seen in the Winter with Twite wintering here in good numbers as well.
Add to that Red Kite along with an occasional White-tailed Eagle.
Warmer weather is bringing more Osprey along with the Common Tern in the summer.
Rarities
Some of those species not seen as often here include the Lesser Yellowlegs. The Great White Egret is in this list, but has been being seen more frequently. Add to those, the Ruddy Shelduck, Glossy Ibis, and Snow Goose.

Other Wildlife
The Grey Seal, Common (Harbour) Seals, Stoat, and an occasional Speckled Wood butterfly can be seen here.

Access and Facilities
On the A92 Montrose to Arbroath road just one mile south of Montrose. Follow the brown signs to Montrose Basin Wildlife Centre.
There is a very small car park at The Lurgies and a footpath from their to the Bridge of Dun.
Visitor centre and hides, free parking
Accommodation is plentiful in the area
