Overview
Situated in the far west of Slovakia, the Male Karpaty is a 100km long range of hills that forms the westernmost sector of the Carpathians. At little more than 750m altitude the hills are densely forested, mainly with Beech and Ash, in lower areas with Oak and Elm. In addition there are meadows and much cultivated land around the villages. This large area is very important for raptors, Saker Falcon in particular, and many parts of these hills are designated nature reserves.

However, the city of Bratislava is conveniently situated at the southern tip of the hills and the town of Nove Mesto and Vahom lies on the northern edge. Road 61 which links the two towns skirts the south-eastern sector of the hills. A network of minor roads between the many hill villages allows the area to be explored thoroughly.
