Overview
Skallingen, north-west of Esbjerg, lies on a peninsula in the Vesterhavet, an extension of the German Waddensee and has similar habitats and birdlife.
The reserve consists of wide sandy beaches and dunes backed by marshland on the inland side.
Birds
Notable Species
Although Avocet, Kentish Plover and terns breed, the main ornithological interest is the large numbers and variety of passage birds.
Pink-footed Goose, Common Eider, Spotted Redshank, Greenshank and Bar-tailed Godwit all occur in good numbers along with a range of other species.
Hen Harrier, Rough-legged Buzzard, Merlin and Peregrine Falcon hunt the area in winter, sometimes also White-tailed Eagle.

Areas of Interest
Blåvandshuk, to the west of the village of Blåvand, is also a good migration watchpoint, particularly in autumn and can provide excellent seawatching.
Access and Facilities
Access is unrestricted and there is camping within the reserve which is reached from Ho, 8km east of Blåvand.
