Overview
The Baltic island of Rügen, Germany's largest, is joined to the mainland by a causeway and is a very popular tourist area in summer. However, Rügen has excellent breeding birds, particularly in the west, with large numbers of Common Crane and geese in autumn.
There are several nature reserves as well as the Jasmund National Park on the east coast. The northern tip, Kap Arkona, is good for migrants.

Notable Species
Udarser Wiek on Rügen is a traditional stopover for more than 25,000 Common Crane during September and October and also attracts waterfowl in good numbers.
The Nonnensee, northwest of Bergen, is another excellent area with grebes and Great Cormorant, Greylag Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Gadwall and Common Teal, Common Pochard and Tufted Duck.
Red Kite, Common Buzzard, European Honey Buzzard and Common Kestrel are among the raptors present on Rügen and White-tailed Eagle can also be seen wandering from breeding sites on neighbouring Usedom.
A wide range of waders occur both as breeding birds and on passage and the seabirds include Caspian Tern which breeds on the nearby island of Heuwiese and can be seen off Rügen.

The 3,000ha Jasmund National Park with its spectacular chalk cliffs lies to the north of Sassnitz in the east of Rügen and has breeding Thrush Nightingale,Red-breasted Flycatcher, Barred Warbler and Red-backed Shrike.
Kap Arkona has breeding Scarlet Rosefinch.
Access and Facilities
The island is reached via a causeway from Stralsund and the main centre is the town of Bergen. As a popular tourist destination Rügen has a wide variety of accommodation with many hotels, holiday centres and campsites.
On the western side near Gingst there is a bridge to the island of Ummanz, the eastern side of which overlooks the Udarser Wiek.
